For The Adventurous Gourmet

Steak sauce

Steak sauce is applied after the steak has been cooked. Even barbecue sauce is best applied in the late stages of grilling, as it can burn if applied too soon.

There are several popular brand name recipes for steak sauce and these can be purchased locally, but these can also make a nice addition to a gourmet gift basket.

Steak spice is a great way to bring out the flavor of steak. Montreal steak spice, Cajun and garlic recipes are gourmet favorites.

Rubs are blended from herbs and spices. They are applied just as the name says, rubbed into the meat to add flavor just before cooking.

You can create your own rubs by recipe or you can purchase gourmet rubs.

Marinades are an excellent way to add flavor to any steak or beef item. Marinades can tenderize some cuts of beef, as well, but if you are purchasing properly aged beef, this is unnecessary. Plain lemon juice, wines and vinegars are often necessary parts of marinades.

There are many recipes for marinades, and many of these are wonderfully tasty. You can also purchase pre-made marinades.

Want a recipe for a quick and tasty marinade? Mix the following ingredients in a small bowl:

1/4 cup olive or peanut oil
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon garlic
1 teaspoon oregano

  • marinating in the refrigerator is safest
  • be sure to dispose of marinades after use

Sauces, rubs, seasonings and marinades can also come in samplers or gift baskets and these can make a wonderful gourmet gift for the steak lover on your gift list. As part of a gift basket or other package, these can be easily sent anywhere in the continental U.S.
